If you haven’t been following over the last couple of weeks, I have been publishing photographs from a test shoot with Georgia K at GAPA Models. For Georgia’s 3rd look I wanted something with a 60’s twist, so we worked with geometric shapes and compositions on a dramatic black and white palette. I absolutely loved the eye make-up by Amy Olden, she read the style just right!
But today’s post caters to the photographer’s out there who follow me 🙂
The first point I want to make is on art-direction, with specific attention to props. This is a very basic set-up on a black background, so I had to ponder upon how I could bring visual interest into the scene, which got me thinking on geometry. The props I ended up using were quite random, and only the beads were from my styling kit. The diamond shapes above were cut from black paper and hung from ceiling, while the glasses in the shot below are 3D glasses with the film cut out. My favourite is the cube I found in a room in the house, which instantly inspired me to add it to the shoot. The white geo-hat is a pot-plant I hadn’t gotten around to planting in yet, which worked out well. If it had planes and patterns it was in! The point is you don’t have to go out and spend money on props you only use once and then feel like you can’t use again – just use your imagination!

Point 2 is a little feedback/review on the new light modifier I tried out here! The Super Wide Beam Reflector from Photon. Similar to a beauty dish but with a variation in depth and light angle, I used it with a white diffuser over the reflector to soften it a little. The light covered the model’s features without illuminating the background, and gave a good gradation from the light to shadow areas. I think it worked well for this style.
